Google Loves Anchor Text in Website Addresses

I recently exchnged emails with one of my manufacturing organizations that I am a member of.  The webmaster is out with an illness and someone is filling in in the interim.

The exchange went like this:

Hello Mark – Wow – impressive – Thanks for stepping in to do the web changes in the interim. My listing looks much better.

About my “Anchor Text” request.  Anchor text simply means that the “visible” text highlighted and underlined in blue is something different than the actual URL address of the link.  On my full description page notice that the link to my website highlighted and underlined in blue is the actual web address www.oceanfabricators.com   I want the link to go to the same place (my website), but the visible text will read “Houston Metal Fabrication”.  The is very valuable for Google ranking – as Google puts a heavy weight on anchor text for keywords and I want my website to show up high for metal fabrication in Houston.  Overall, this would be a valuable service for all members – to ask them what keyword or keyword “Phrase” they would like you to focus on.

I am not sure how you make changes to your website, but if you are able to place the HTML code in – it needs to look like the following (you can copy and paste this code into the proper area).

<a href=”http://www.oceanfabricators.com“ target=”_blank”>
Houston Metal Fabrication</a>

Right now the code on your page simply reads: <a href=”http://www.oceanfabricators.com/” target=”_blank”>www.oceanfabricators.com</a>

Therefore “www.oceanfabricators.com” is the visible text.

Computer and iPad Tips

It’s the nature of the beast.  Because of my internet marketing, most family members rely on me for IT issues (and I hate IT).  That’s the whole reason I wrote the book – taking the technical jargon out!

Anyhow, on a recent family trip I had the following conversation:

Hi Lydia. It was so nice to finally meet you and Rodger. Sorry we did not have more time to go through iPad stuff. Here is the link to the page where I have computer tips. Click on “Three Simple Tips to Speed Up Windows XP. http://get-top-ranking-on-search-engines.com/computer-tools-tips-tricks/

If your computer is not faster after dong this, look at any unnecessary programs and delete them, by going to Start –> Control Panel –> Add / Remove Programs (make double sure the program is not important – if in doubt – leave it. I usually have to Google the program name to find out what it is. I almost deleted a necessary Microsoft program once, because I did not recognize it.  Continue reading Computer and iPad Tips

Google Authorship Verifies Quality Backlinks

Google is using a new method to “Qualify” a backlink.  Since so many Black Hats have overused backlnks (ask JC Penny) Google is using Google +  as another way to verify the relevance,  authorship and qualify the link.

From Google: http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1408986

If you want your authorship information to appear in search results for the content you create, you’ll need a Google+ Profile with a good, recognizable headshot as your profile photo. Then, verify authorship of your content by associating it with your profile using either of the methods below. Google doesn’t guarantee to show author information in Google Web Search or Google News results.

Option 1: Link your content to your Google+ profile using a verified email address.

Don’t have an email address on the same domain as your content? Follow the instructions listed in Option 2 below.

  1. Check that you have a email address (for example, levy@wired.com) on the same domain as your content (wired.com).
  2. Make sure that each article or post you publish on that domain has a clear byline identifying you as the author (for example, “By Steven Levy” or “Author: Steven Levy”).
  3. Visit the Authorship page and submit your email address to Google. No matter how many articles or posts you publish on this domain, you only need to do this process once. Your email will appear in the Contributor to section of your Google+ profile. If you want to keep your email private, change the visibility of your link.
  4. To see what author data Google can extract from your page, use the rich snippets testing tool.

Option 2: Set up authorship by linking your content to your Google+ profile

  1. Create a link to your Google+ profile from your webpage, like this:
      <a href="[profile_url]?rel=author">Google</a>

Replace [profile_url] with the your Google+ profile URL, like this:

      <a href="https://plus.google.com/109412257237874861202?
       rel=author">Google</a>

Your link must contain the ?rel=author parameter. If it’s missing, Google won’t be able to associate your content with your Google+ profile.

  2. Add a reciprocal link back from your profile to the site(s) you just updated.
    1. Edit the Contributor To section.
    2. In the dialog that appears, click Add custom link, and then enter the website URL.
    3. If you want, click the drop-down list to specify who can see the link.
    4. Click Save.
  3. To see what author data Google can extract from your page, use the rich snippets testing tool.

Keywords in URL

A recent client asks about the number of keywords you should put in your URL.  As mentioned in our keyword chapter, if you don’t already have an established website domain address, consider launching one with keywords in the URL.  ( www.get-top-ranking-on-search-engines.com is a perfect example)

Hi Julie.  Thanks for the update.  To your question:  ”Is there a point when too many words in the domain name is detrimental?”  Yes there is from the standpoint of which keywords you are focusing on.  If your keyword research is showing that the majority of folks are searching on all five of the words you have (correctly) separated with hyphens, then it’s OK.  If only two or three of those keywords are getting high search results, then the rest of them will dilute the value of the two or three most important.  I hope that helps.  The new book is about done!

Wells Fargo now allows money transfers using email and mobile phone numbers.  It’s limited to other Wells Fargo customers and Bank of America customers, but they say they will be adding more banks soon.

More signs that mobile is here to stay.  According to  a survey by Fiserv, mobile banking is everywhere. More than 25% of U.S. households use mobile banking via text messaging, mobile browsers and downloadable apps.

Deleting A Facebook Page

Once you have your old page pulled up. (Be absolutely sure this is the page you want to delete) Click on “Admin Panel” button located near the top right area (Only if the Admin Panel is not already showing at the top portion – above your large cover image).  Then you can click on the down arrow at “Manage Page”. On the drop down list after hitting the down arrow, you click on “Edit Page”. On the next page that shows up, you will see a list of options on the left hand side bar and “Manage Permissions” should already be highlighted.  At the bottom middle area of that same web page, you should see a “Delete Page” option to check.
